Word
prediction software reduces the number of keystrokes a student
needs to write and express their thoughts. The most common way these programs
operate is by making educated guesses about the next word a student will want to
type and providing a list of choices for them to choose from. An amazing
feature that most of these programs have is the option to set up a custom dictionary. This allows for
specific words related to a particular activity or subject to be included and
suggested for the student. These software programs are especially helpful for
students who type with a single finger (or object such as a dowel), those whose
typing speed is extremely slow, and students with learning disabilities who
have severe problems with spelling. Common word prediction software programs
that are used include Co:Writer, Word Q, WriteOnline and Ginger.
